TASTING NOTES:
Huge fresh hop aroma. Overpowering to say the least. Pours red-brown with thick foamy tan head. Laces well, and clear. With 100 IBUs I was a bit skeptical of its drinkability, but after letting it warm up, it has smoothed out as much as I would expect. Serious hop flavor. Major Left Coast take on a barley wine style beer, much like Avery Hog Heaven. I would call it a Triple IPA (TIPA). Fruit, caramel, hops, pine, yet a very clean aftertaste. Strange I don't taste any wood? It may just be that the bittering has overpowered any latent wood flavor. I am very interested to see how this gem ages! Tasted from the bomber at 55F.
I don't usually buy Fish Tale beers, but the general ratings on this are so high, I had to try it.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:

The Mighty Fish Brewers first produced Ten Squared Anniversary Ale to celebrate Fish Brewing Company's tenth anniversary. The ale was so good and the response to it so overwhelmingly positive that it has become the crown jewel of REEL ALEs.
Ten different hops: Horizon, Chinook, Columbus, Willamette, Tradition, Northern Brewer, Santiam, Tettnanger, Cascade and Golding, in the order of their use -- give Ten Squared a unique hop character which has to be tasted to be believed.
Even with 100 IBUs, this brew sports a strong malt backbone. Two-row Pale, Caramel 40, Caramel 75, Special B and Aromatic malts impart remarkable balance for such a hop monster. This is smooth ale with surprising similarities to ten year old malt whiskey
.

Vichtenaar Flemish Ale

Very nice! I sample aroma from the bottle, and got dark cherries, floral, and sweet & sour. Flavor is balanced, malty, fruity, and swet & sour. Dark fruit, subtle sour, and very clean. Very very clean. Light bodied with virtually no head, but it does stick around. Tasted from the bottle @ 60F.
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:
"Vichtenaar" is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, "Vichtenaar" gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. "Vichtenaar" is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. "Vichtenaar" is one of the last Flemish "Oud bruins" that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 "Vichtenaar" was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Jewbelation Fourteen

TASTING NOTES:
Wow. So I am giving this a little extra since it is so young but has great potential. Pours very dark with frothy tan head. Huge booze, wood, and malt aroma from the neck.Very strong tasting with lots of malts, dark fruit, and hop undertones. Definite hoppy finish bathed in booze, wood and chocolate. This is one to lay down for a while for sure. Tasted from the 22 OZ @ 55F. Two of these and you're toast.

Kookaburra Sweet Black Licorice is made by Darrel Lea Licorice of Australia.. they all taste great!

I always forget to write about the licorice that I consider 'standard' licorice.  So today I am going to pull the old Kookaburra Red and Black Licorice out of my hat.  I guess I don't really think of this as imported, even though it is,  because it is re-packed here in Washington State.
In 1957, Darrell Lea’s unique soft eating liquorice was developed.

25% of the Australian liquorice market is now soft eating.

50 million strands of Darrell Lea’s soft eating liquorice are consumed by Australians of all ages each year, equating to 2.5 strands for every single Australian.

40,000km of Liquorice is produced each year at the Darrell Lea factory (ENOUGH TO CROSS AUSTRALIA 10 TIMES!)

The United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa & New Zealand are among the countries that now eat Darrell Lea’s famous soft eating liquorice.

Darrell Lea liquorice is now sold in more than 8000 retail outlets around the world – and growing constantly.

Darrell Lea Fruit Flavoured Liquorice

1998
With the success of our soft eating traditional liquorice, and, to cater to more palates than ever, Darrell Lea introduced the first of its fruit flavoured soft eating liquorice range with the ever popular strawberry flavour.

2004
Demand proved so popular, that the tangy green apple flavour was launched.

2005
Mangoes are synonymous with Summer, so mango devotees were encouraged to indulge their senses in any season with the introduction of mango liquorice in April 2005.

2006
Blackcurrant joins the family of Darrell Lea fruit flavoured liquorice lining up beside the hugely successful mango, green apple and strawberry flavours which continue to tantalise the taste buds of an ever growing number of Australians.

Other flavours have also been launched as "limited editions", some uniquely for our shops and others uniquely for export. These flavours have included Pineapple, Mandarin, Cinnamon and Ginger, with more on the way.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT DARRELL LEA LIQUORICE?
No other liquorice is as soft as Darrell Lea soft eating liquorice. Such soft liquorice can only be obtained by ensuring that it is fresh at all times and by a specific cooking process. Darrell Lea has a significant advantage of being in control of the manufacturing, distribution and sale of their products and can therefore ensure regular turnover and ultimate freshness.

Compare the shelf life of Darrell Lea soft eating liquorice and other liquorice – Darrell Lea Batch 37 liquorice has a 5 week shelf life, whereas most other non-Darrell Lea liquorice has a 15 month shelf life. Ultimately the difference in the texture and the taste is testimony to the freshness of Darrell Lea Liquorice.

Darrell Lea Soft Eating Liquorice contains such ingredients as prime Australian wheat flour, semi refined raw sugar, molasses, treacle, natural liquorice extract, glucose and aniseed oil.

Darrell Lea liquorice is 97% fat free, cholesterol free and low in salt

JUST WHAT IS LIQUORICE?
It shoud be noted that the word "Liquorice" refers to 2 separate items

1. Liquorice extract - the pure form derived from the licorice plant, and

2. Confectionery Liquorice - whch we all like to eat.

Licorice Extract

The liquorice plant has the botanical name, Glycyrrhiza, which means sweet root. It has a unique flavour and is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Also known as the blue flowering snow pea, the liquorice plant grows wild in the subtropical areas of Europe and Asia. In favourable conditions, the root can grow to about 8 metres and vary in thickness from thin fibres to several cm in diameter. The flavour is extracted from the plant roots using steam and then the liquid is concentrated. The end result is either in the form of a syrup or powder.

It is used in a variety of products from beverages like soft drinks, liquor and tea to soup broths, herbs and spices and even tobacco products. The use of liquorice as an ingredient in candy is, of course, one of which most of us are familiar

Liquorice is also good for what ails you. Often called the “grandfather of Chinese herbs” because it has been used for medicinal purposes for over 3,000 years, liquorice root extract still appears in most Chinese herbal remedies for a wide variety of conditions.

The use of liquorice as a medicinal remedy is documented during the time of Hippocrates in the fourth century BC.
Later this modest plant was also supposed to have healed the wounds and quenched the thirst of Nero’s armies in the first century AD.

It has also been found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, put there to accompany them to a higher plane.

During the Middle Ages, crusaders brought this sweet liquorice treat to England. Many years later, a monastery in Pontefract, England began producing liquorice candy.

Early settlers brought liquorice recipes to America. Today liquorice is an important ingredient in a wide range of consumer products throughout the world.

Lost Abbey Deliverance

Nice! Aroma of roasted nuts, molasses, alcohol, and fruit.Pours very dark brown, thick tan head, mdeium body and fairly active carbonation. Dregs all around. Very strong alcohol notes, bitter hops in there too. I really taste the barrels. Many beers have "wood" in the name, but few really deliver like this. Sweet, smooth, strong ale. You can actually eat this beer. Tasted at 60F from the bottle.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:
What is Deliverance and how does one bottle it? Well, it's a blend of Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpent's Stout and Brandy Barrel Aged Angel's Share. You see in Bourbon Barrel Aged Serpent's Stout we have captured the essence of one very evil beer (the Devil's brew if you will). Blacker than the strongest plague and hotter than Hades itself, there's fire in this beer- a veritable cauldron of Bourbon infused beer. Left to its own devices, this would be one sinister liquid.
--
Yet, we have tempered this odious darkness with heaven sent Saintly created Angel's Share. And together, these two beers will work in harmony to deliver us on that day.

Older Viscosity

F’ me...WOW! Aroma of bourbon, wood, dark fruit, molasses, fig & cocoa. Pours Snipes Black with rich chocolatey head. Mouthfeel is warm, oily, and sticky. Taste is deep bourbon, molasses, wood, malts, and strong alcohol finish. Sweet up front, and bit dry and slight bitterness on the end. Tasted from the bottle @ 60F. This beer rocks!Don’t be stupid about it. If you find it, buy it.
--
--
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:
This is definitely not your dad’s 30 weight!
An enormously rich but satisfying beer, Older Viscosity is 100% straight no chaser barrel-aged Old Viscosity — the beer we blend in the production of Old Viscosity.
--
The color is black like asphalt and the aroma is an uncompromising malty nose with dark caramel and chocolate overtones.
--
The barrel aging provides hints of vanilla and American oak. The flavor begins with a coating of rich malts and dark chocolate and finishes in a dry bitter-sweetness balanced by the firm bitterness of roasted dark malts.

STONE DOUBLE BASTARD ALE

OK...so I popped the cap on a bomber and got hit with some serious fruit, alcohol, and floral notes. Very strong aroma from the bottle. Nice off-white head, cloudy redish brown beer. To-be-honest, it really didnt’ taste like an 11+% ale, at least not in the beginning. As it warmed up, I started to taste more ABV, hints of wood, hops, and citrus. Very tasty, but it seems a bit over-rated IMO. Nonetheless, a very nice strong ale. tasted @ 55°F.
RATINGS:

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a lacerative muther of a beer. The evil big brother of Arrogant Bastard Ale. It is strongly suggested you stay far, far away from this beer. Those foolish enough to venture close enough to taste will experience a punishingly unforgiving assault on the palate. ’Course there’s always the masochists... [Note: this beer doesn’t have Stone in front of the name by explicit request from the brewer.]
